Materials related to the personal and professional life of John R. Pierce.Correspondence is primarily from Pierce's time at Bell Labs and Caltech, and includes both internal and external letters. Correspondents include academic and lawyer Nicholas Johnson, former Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission Lee Loevinger, engineer Edward E. David Jr., and former President of Bell Labs William O. Baker. There is also the correspondence of character Alexander Botts Jr., created by Pierce as an excercise in imagining the letters a fictional engineer might write and receive. Personal materials include daybooks and calendars used by Pierce; awards and certificates, including his academic degrees; and biographical articles. Manuscripts are primarily unpublished articles and stories, sometimes written under the pseudonyms J.J. Coupling and John Pierce.Professional materials include book reviews, technical memoranda written for Bell Labs, scientific papers and reprints, and books. There is also a small amount of material related to Pierce's time teaching at Caltech, as well as materials related to his work with IRCAM, the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music.

Microfilm of fifteen letters sent between various members of the Richards family between 1837 and 1896. The reel contains two letters written by Franklin D. Richards to his cousin Edwin D. Peirson, and sent from Kirtland in 1837 and Cincinnati in 1842; a letter from Samuel W. Richards to his parents, dated Manchester, Vermont, 1843; a letter to Samuel from his father Phineas Richards, dated Richmond, Massachusetts, 1843; a letter to Mary Atchison signed E.R.W. (probably her sister Elizabeth Walson), sent from Missouri, and dated 1874 (probably 1847); a letter to Mary H. Richards from Rebecca M. Jones dated 1847; a letter to Franklin and Samuel Richards in Liverpool, probably sent by Nancy Richards Peirson from Richmond, Massachusetts, in 1847; a letter to Samuel Richards from Robert and Elizabeth Walson, dated 1849; two letters to Phineas Richards dated Salt Lake City 1850, and possibly signed William Richards; a letter from Phineas Richards to his wife Wealthy Richards, dated Sanpete Valley, 1850; a letter to Samuel Richards from his sister Sophy, dated New Orleans 1863; a letter to Samuel Richards from John N. Pike, clerk of council in Salt Lake City, dated 1873 (as well as Richards's reply to Pike); and a letter from Samuel Richards to Franklin Richards, dated Brooklyn, New York, 1896.

Microfilm of six diaries kept by William Farrer from 1849-1854. The first volume, dated 1849, recalls Farrer's travels from Utah to California with Charles Coulson Rich. The 1850-1851 diary begins when Farrer was preparing to depart California for Hawaii, and recounts his sea voyage and missionary work through 1851. The remaining four diaries were kept while Farrer was serving on his Hawaiian mission, and are dated 1851-1852, 1852-1853, 1853, and 1854. Also included on the reel is "A Short Account of My Mission to the Sandwich Islands," sent by Farrer to "Pres. Clawson and Tibbetts" in 1855, and a brief excerpt on Farrer from the Deseret News, dated 1897 and written by Ramona Farrer Cottam.

Franklin Pierce Mexican-American War journal, Mexico :

Journal contains Pierce's accounts as a brigadier general during the Mexican-American War while marching from Veracruz to Perote, Mexico. He discusses the health of the troops, fears of yellow fever, camps, mules and transport, travel challenges, engagements with and attacks by Mexican fighters, the weather, and the current situation in Jalapa. The journal also contains Pierce's musings on war and includes the detailed orders issued by him on July 13. The first page appears to have been written in retrospect and describes the sea journey to Veracruz onboard the transport Kepler, which departed on May 27 and arrived in Mexico on June 27. Journal has been bound with the title "Franklin Pierce His Diary of the Mexican War 1847 Original Autograph Ms."

This collection consists of 39 glass negatives, 21 film negatives, and 34 copy prints and original prints related to the Charles C. Pierce family and photography business. This is a miscellaneous group of images depicting various family members and scenes (many unidentified) as well as two views of the interior and exterior of the Pierce business (PI-CO) at 1572 W. Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, and Pierce's home in Springfield, Massachusetts. Also included are two images of C.C. Pierce posing with the Ybarra family, as well as several images of Hattie Gower Pierce, C.C. Pierce's wife and business partner. Several photographs dating from approximately 1890s-1910s include: people posed outside the "Glenwood Hotel, East Los Angeles, 119 Dailey [or Daly] St., W. of N. Broadway / Mrs. Dan Jones, Prop., Dr. Harry Fasic, Dr. D.K. Carson, Mr. Stiff." Also "Gower residence, 349 E. Edgeware Rd., Los Angeles"; group portrait in front of "Watts Presbyterian Church, Shorb Avenue" [Los Angeles or Alhambra?]; East Los Angeles Congregational Church interior; people in a camp wagon having a picnic; and a bird's-eye-view of a tourist tent village on Catalina Island. Besides Pierce relatives, other names identified are Spangler and Gower family members; Marie Lucile Spangler marrying Gerard Nicholson; Miss Susan Croswell at her 100th birthday party with members of the Wilton, Bryan and Croswell families.

Items collected by William O. Baker related to John R. Pierce, including an original typescript of Pierce's "Life in a Laboratory"; a handwritten note by Pierce regarding Bell Labs' ESS machine dated 1959; collected remembrances from Pierce's memorial service in 2002; and an announcement of Pierce's death.
